Growing up, my grandfather had a ritual. Every few weekends, he'd walk out to the driveway, look at his car, and say the same thing: "It's time." That was the signal. He'd pull out the wash bucket, line up the soap, the mitts, the chamois, and the detailing brushes like a surgeon preparing for an operation. Then he'd hand me a $20 and say, "Earn it."

He didn't just pay me to wash a car. He taught me how to do it right.
